How to remove grasscloth wallpaper

How do you remove grasscloth wallpaper? This instructional video shows you how to do it easily.

Grasscloth wallpaper is made from woven strands of natural fibers, such as hemp, jute, arrowroot, or bamboo. It’s an elegant, textured wallcovering that is popular in upscale hotels, commercial buildings, and homes.

The natural materials used to make grasscloth are often delicate and prone to tearing.  This can make removing grasscloth wallpaper a challenge. Thankfully, there are plenty of tools that make removing grass wallpaper easier.

Start with a Test Area

Before deciding on how to proceed with grasscloth wallpaper removal, start with a test area. Saturate an area of around 1.5 sq/ft with a quality grasscloth wallpaper remover solution. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes, then try removing the treated section.

If it peels away easily, treat the rest of the wall with the remover solution, section by section, until you have stripped the entire wall.

We recommend using a gel wallpaper and paste remover for grasscloth. Gel removers stick to the wall and evaporate slowly. This allows more time to break down stubborn wallpaper paste.

Make sure to remove any residual glue from the wall before re-covering with new wallpaper or painting. Fill a bucket of water and add concentrated wallpaper remover solution (follow package instructions). Then use a scouring sponge to gently clean the walls. Allow the walls to dry completely before painting or re-covering.
