Director of Research & Development

Job Summary

The Director of Research and Development will lead key projects to support business goals. Plan, coordinate, and direct programs for product development and improvement of manufacturing processes. Coordinate research and analysis activities according to applicable government regulations, manufacturing processes, or other considerations, and approves modification of formulas, standards, specifications, and processes and development of new products.

Essential DutieS and Responsibilities

•Contributes to the assessment, development, reformulation, quality, maintenance, and enhancement of products through planning, executing and analysis of experiments with clear and accurate results.
•Contributes to the ideation and innovation process and build a pipeline of innovation projects effectively and drive current and future new product development projects
•Determines and calculates batch adjustments as necessary, mathematical and bench blends.
•Participates in customer complaint and process incident investigations.
•Accountable for the solution of complex technical problems (product/process) and demonstrating significant knowledge and use of chemicals, raw materials, substrates, and instruments.
•Reviews research, testing, quality control, and other operational reports to ensure that quality standards, efficiency, and schedules are met.
•Develops and analyzes statistical data and products specifications to establish quality and reliability expectancy of finished product.
•Develop concepts, products and solutions.
•Understand customer expectations on to-be manufactured product.
•Determine and execute improved technologies used by suppliers, competitors and customers.
•Transfer new technologies, products and manufacturing process into and out of company.
•Research, design and evaluate materials, assemblies, processes and equipment.
•Develop concepts, products and solutions by working with cross functional departments.
•Manage customer technical relationships and perform Request for Proposal (RFP) Review, customer visits and product testing.
•Supervise the R & D Chemist and Quality Control Technician.

Education Qualifications & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

•Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or related field
•10 plus year of related experience
•Preferred Master’s Degree or in other Science related degree.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•Experience with starch-based chemistries.
•Good organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written
•Excellent project management skills and the ability to lead projects and work independently with minimal supervision.
•Familiarity with application and troubleshooting of industrial coatings.
•Analytical chemistry and the ability to extend it beyond the realm of adhesives.
•Proven problem-solving and decision-making ability.
•Ability to adapt and change quickly in response to new situations/demands.
•Strong organizational and analytical skills and ability to work effectively in a team and in a cross-function environment.
•Experience in environmental regulation and the development of safety data sheets (DSD) a plus
•Ability to provide attention to details but also has the ability to think beyond the ‘transactional’ and provide ‘big picture’/strategic thinking.
•Use intuition and experience to complement data; designs work flows and procedures.
•Excellent interpersonal and advanced project management skills.
•Well-organized, attentive to detail, skilled in setting priorities and meeting deadlines, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
•Leadership agility.
•Ability to travel 10-15% of time

Computer Skills

•Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project Management).
•Experience with ERP Systems.
